SABC Education and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) continue to work together to strengthen civic education and empower South Africans with a better understanding of local government, service delivery and meaningful community participation.
Through the ongoing Know Your Municipality. Know Your Voice. campaign, the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between citizens and local government by providing accessible information on municipal roles and responsibilities, service delivery processes, accountability mechanisms and opportunities for active community engagement.
As part of this collaboration, educational content is being broadcast across 13 SABC Radio stations in South Africa’s indigenous languages, ensuring that communities across the country have access to relevant and practical information in the languages they use every day. The campaign also extends to SABC television, digital platforms, podcasts, social media channels and online educational content, enabling wider access to trusted civic education resources.
A key feature of the campaign is Kasi2Kasi, SABC 2’s community-focused television programme that explores local government through the lived experiences of South Africans. The programme highlights both the achievements and challenges within municipalities while showcasing practical solutions and encouraging constructive dialogue between communities and local government.
The campaign is designed to move citizens beyond awareness by equipping them with practical knowledge on civic participation, reporting service delivery issues, understanding municipal responsibilities and engaging meaningfully with local government structures. By helping communities understand where to report concerns, who is responsible for specific services and how to follow up on reported matters, the initiative promotes informed participation and active citizenship.
SALGA has welcomed the continued collaboration, recognising the important role that public education plays in promoting transparency, accountability, trust and active citizenship within municipalities across South Africa.
Through the reach of SABC’s radio, television and digital platforms, the partnership continues to provide citizens with the knowledge and tools needed to engage effectively with local government and contribute to building responsive, accountable and service-oriented communities.
Members of the public are encouraged to tune in to participating SABC Radio stations, watch Kasi2Kasi on SABC 2, visit SABC Education’s digital platforms and engage with campaign content as part of the ongoing effort to build stronger municipalities and informed communities.
