WIN A HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE WITH SABC TV LICENCES

GRAND PRIZE WINNER REVEALED

Johannesburg, 20 February 2024-  On Spring Day, 1 September 2023 SABC TV Licences launched the Win A Holiday Experience competition campaign in an effort to encourage South African customers to pay (or, renew) their TV Licences.

For their efforts, customers would be rewarded with weekly prizes such as Hisense Smart TVs, JBL Bluetooth Speakers, Sony Wireless Headphones and Lenovo laptops. This would be done through a random selection automated by a dedicated microsite that was setup to monitor the competition entries.

In order to qualify for the prizes, the customer needed to pay their TV Licence between 1 September 2023 and 15 December 2023; then go to www.winaholidayexperiencewithsabctvlicences.co.za; register for the competition; receive a confirmation message stating that their entry is valid; then, a random winner would be selected each week from the valid entries.

To sweeten the deal, the overall winner for the competition would get to choose an international experience between the Coachella music festival in California, United States of America. Or, a Bundesliga match in Germany.

Thabo Batshe, a 26-year-old hailing from Kimberley, in the Northern Cape entered the Win A Holiday Experience with SABC TV Licences competition hoping he would get one of the weekly prizes.

“I was on Twitter, and I saw [the competition],” Batshe explained.

“After entering the competition because I had paid my TV Licence about a month ago, I saw a couple of winners on Twitter and Instagram, and I was really rooting for a Play Station because I saw that someone had won a Play Station” he continued.

Like many hopefuls, Thabo Batshe was redirected to the Win A Holiday Experience with SABC TV Licences microsite from social media – where he clicked on one of the links shared from the SABC Corporate pages. After filling out his TV Licence and personal contact details he received a confirmation message on his email account that informed him that his entry was valid and that he had been placed in the pool where a lucky winner would be randomly selected for either a weekly prize or the grand holiday experience.

Clement Maosa from SABC 1’s Skeem Saam broke the news to Thabo Batshe when they secretly met up at the Randburg Sports Complex earlier in the year. “Today is a big day because we are going to meet the winner of the SABC TV Licences’ Win A Holiday Experience competition,” Maosa explained.

“What Thabo does not know is that he is the overall winner of the competition. He thinks he is coming here to pick one of the weekly packages only to realize that he is the grand winner.”

Thabo Batshe, who had entered the competition when he was still at his grandmother’s place in Kimberley, had since moved to Johannesburg for work and is now living in the Randburg area. He was with his girlfriend when Clement Maosa revealed the surprise to him.

“I have been telling him that I actually want to go to Coachella,” the girlfriend explained.

“One thing that I am really looking forward to is experiencing a festival of this nature,” Batshe said in excitement. “And also going overseas and getting to travel.”

Thabo Batshe works in Marketing as a Communication Assistant and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences at the University of the Free State. This was followed by a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Strategic Communication at the University of Johannesburg. It will be his first time traveling outside of South Africa and he is currently applying for his passport which he will need to get a VISA in order to travel to California, in America.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will be taking place between the 19th and 21st of April 2024.

THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHES THE 2024 NATIONAL AND PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS

The Electoral Commission of South Africa today – 24 October 2023 – formally launched the 2024 National and Provincial Elections (NPE2024) programme, declaring that it is ready to host millions of eligible voters at over 23 296 voting stations across the country.

The NPE 2024 will be historic as independent candidates will, for the first time, be able to contest for seats at the national and provincial elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa assented to the law enabling the participation of independent candidates in April 2023.

The launch was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand and attended by the leadership of the Commission, various stakeholders, including political parties.

“Today, we stand proud as the pre-eminent Constitutionally-mandated body that manages elections and make bold that we are ready for the NPE 2024,” the Commission’s Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo declared.

Mamabolo explained that while the term of office of the current legislatures, national and 9 provincial, ends around 18 May 2024, the national and provincial governments would remain in office until the newly elected public representatives are able to take office.

He said in terms of the Constitution, the country must have an election within 90 days of the expiry of the legislatures’ terms. “Therefore, an election is possible between May and the middle of August 2024. The proclamation of the election date is by our head of state, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa after consultation with the Electoral commission. Our expectation is that the provincial elections will be, as they have for the past 30 years, be synchronised with the national election,” he added.

Mamabolo said that once the Electoral Amendment Act was signed into law by the President, the Commission moved with deliberate speed to finalise the supporting business applications necessary for the implementation of the Act.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Prior to each election, the Electoral Commission launches registration drives aimed at enrolling new voters and empowering existing ones to scrutinize and, where necessary, amend their registration details. These endeavours breathe life into the voters’ roll.

The Commission reiterates its commitment to open nearly 23 296 voting stations for the weekend of November 18th and 19th, 2023. This monumental effort not only registers new voters but also facilitates the verification of the roll. Station-based registration ensures equitable access to the vote.

Furthermore, we’ve expanded registration modalities to enable voters’ continuous enrolment. For those with internet access, registration, inspection, and updates are accessible via www.elections.org.za. Voters may also visit local Commission offices or capitalize on various activation campaigns to register and update their information.

MEDIA CAMPAIGN

The theme for NPE2024 will be “Your Democracy, Own It”.

The creative celebrates the fruits of democracy by showcasing different, real-life experiences of young South Africans from all corners of the country. Their stories are told in an epic, emotive and inspirational manner that gives personalised context to democracy as enshrined in our Constitution. The diverse audiences will relate the Commission’s call-to-action message to celebrate SA’s electoral democracy’s 30th anniversary by registering and voting in the NPE2024. It will be broadcast on national TV and radio stations as well as on various digital platforms.

The Electoral Commission reiterated its unwavering readiness to host and oversee the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. It issued a clarion call to South Africans to use the Commission’s online portal for registration, verification, and updates. “We urge you to actively participate in the registration weekends and exercise your responsibility as engaged citizens who choose their own representatives. We extend a call to all electoral stakeholders to stand shoulder to shoulder with us, working collaboratively to make these historic elections a resounding success,” Mamabolo said.

Commission Chairperson Moepya said: “As we gaze upon 2024, an election year of unique significance, marking not only another stride in South Africa’s democratic journey but also celebrating the 30th birthday of our electoral democracy, let us remember that democracy is not a destination; it is a perpetual journey. It thrives on our active engagement, reverence for its values, and collective effort to surmount challenges.

With hope and determination, we embark on this journey, knowing that the next 30 years hold opportunities for growth, unity, and progress. Together, as South Africans, we shall ensure that our electoral democracy continues to shine as a beacon for the world.”

SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IS CHANGING THE GENDER LANDSCAPE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Digital technologies have created new spaces for interaction and enabled new ways to connect, share experiences, work and build communities. It is estimated that by 2030 in Sub-Saharan Africa alone more than 230 million jobs will require digital skill sets. The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector has always been a male-dominated industry. In 2022, it was estimated that women made up only 27% of the tech industry. Even more alarming is the mere 6% of women in app development.

Unfortunately, this digital divide is exacerbated in Africa, and countries with historic or systemic socio-economic empowerment. As one of the fastest growing industries globally, it is concerning that women, who make up 50% of the workforce, make up less than 30% of ICT workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

IYF’s digital empowerment program, Skills for Success (S4S), has been addressing this gap, giving students the opportunity to enroll in a variety of ICT courses certified by Google, including professional certificates in IT, UX Design, Data Analytics, Project Management and Digital Marketing & E-Commerce. Currently, 80% of the program’s enrolled learners are women.

Thus far, over 3000 people have enrolled in the S4S program, with more learners being onboarded as the programs expands. What has set S4S apart from many other educational ICT program is its holistic structure, which not only attends to hard skills required in the ICT sector, but also soft skills such as constructing a CV, and base-entrepreneurship skillsets, designed to provide students with the tools required to launch their own businesses. This push towards entrepreneurship addresses another socio-economic inequality – the lack of women-owned SMMEs. Women own only 36% of all small businesses worldwide, a figure that is amplified in lower-income countries.

The program has been rolled out in three African countries – South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria, receiving positive responses from enrolled learners and graduates, who have embraced their newfound IT skills and entrepreneurial learning. A female Nigerian learner spoke on the course’s effect saying, “I have strong desire to share the knowledge I’ve gained with others, with a particular focus on empowering females through the transfer of these valuable expertise.”

International Women in Cyber Day (1 September) draws awareness to the gender gaps in the ICT sector and recognises the need for more diversity in the industry. The IYF is not only committed to proliferating this awareness, but more importantly, actioning sustainable change in the sector through S4S. Inequities in ICT knowledge and employment is not something that will be fixed overnight, but change will only come through methods that empower those interested in pursuing ICT with an accessible, sustainable and practical program that has a tangible impact.

And we are already seeing the results of the Skills for Success program, to date more than 1200 livelihood opportunities have been documented as well as a marked increase in the job security and earning potential of graduates. S4S’s achievements are undoubtedly changing the gender landscape of the ICT sector in Africa and moving the needle further towards a more equitable economy.

Importantly, there is a butterfly effect to S4S program. Forbes recognised that 60.2% of gender diverse companies reported increased profits and productivity, suggesting that companies that embrace gender equity are ultimately more likely to succeed, and more likely to bolster economies. With S4S providing an accessible pipeline of women learners into the ICT industry, the effect is not only the empowerment of women, but the growth of the ICT sector, whilst providing solid foundations for a strengthened economy.
