When applying for an ID, it is necessary to include a cellular phone number for the purposes of tracking and tracing your ID application and delivery of your ID. Once the ID application has been received at a local Home Affairs Office, Embassy or High Commission, it is sent to our Head Office in Pretoria. The processes in Pretoria entail matching the applicant’s fingerprints with those on our records to establish if the applicant is indeed active on the National Population Register. This is then followed by other delicate processes that finally end up with the printing of an ID book.
After an identity document has been printed, it is forwarded to the Home Affairs office where the applicant initially submitted the application. An identity document will only be forwarded to an applicant’s postal address if the applicant requests this and if that postal address is valid. It is important that applicants provide the correct postal and residential addresses, and ensure that the names they provide are spelt accurately to avoid spelling errors.
The cellular phone number is important as the Department will update applicants of its progress and readiness of an ID through a short message service (SMS).
REMEMBER: To receive an update on your ID application status, you need to sms the word ID, followed by a space, followed by your ID number, to 32551.
For example: ID 1212127891082
Your network operator charges R1.00 for each SMS sent.
