When applying for your ID, you will need to do the following:
An application form (Form BI 9) must be completed at your local Home Affairs office;
You will need to submit a certified copy of a birth certificate or a reference book number, or a copy of the TBVC (Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei) country identity or travel document, and two recent identical ID-size photographs;
Your fingerprints will be taken for recording in the National Population Register on the BI 9 application form. This can only be done by an official of the Department of Home Affairs at a regional or district office or at a South African Foreign Mission abroad. In the case of a first issue, a person who is already in possession of an ID number will only provide fingerprints on the application form;
If you are married and want to assume your spouse’s surname, the marriage certificate must be submitted;
Should a woman apply for an ID and resume using any of the surnames she was previously known by, documentary proof for e.g. her birth certificate or marriage certificate must be submitted to prove that she is entitled to use that surname;
In the case of re-issues, the ID can be issued to persons whose identity documents are lost, stolen or damaged. If under these circumstances, an applicant requests a temporary identity certificate (TIC), the Home Affairs office may issue the TIC instantly, subject to the verification of the applicant’s thumbprints. The TIC is valid for a period of three months and can be used as a form of identity while application for a proper ID is being processed;
The TIC application will require the thumbprints of the applicant for verification purposes;
In the case of a naturalised citizen or permanent-residence holder, the naturalisation certificate, permanent-residence certificate, or the exemption certificate should be attached to the application form; and
In the case of a late registration of birth to apply for an ID, your fingerprints would be taken for recording in the National Population Register on the BI 9 application form.
A 2 month processing time is required when applying for an initial issue of an identity document.
