MEC assessed schools damaged by Hailstorm in West Rand
Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, has expressed concern over two schools that were damaged by the severe hailstorm that hit Gauteng yesterday; 09 October 2017. The two damaged schools, assessed by the MEC, this afternoon are Laerskool Protearif and Laerskool Muldersdrift in Krugersdorp.
We, immediately despatched our Infrastructure Inspectors to both schools to assess the extent of the damages, and the inspectors are estimating the damage cost of about R4million. The department working with all relevant stakeholders will move swiftly in appointing the Service Providers to repair the damages.
What is of extreme concern to the MEC is that this tragedy is happening at a crucial time when our learners are busy preparing for their final exams. We can confirm that there was no teaching and learning at both schools today, 10 October 2017. We are currently working with the School Governing Bodies, Community Members and other Education Stakeholders in negotiating for a temporary accommodation at neighbouring schools and churches around the area.
We would like to apologise to our learners, educators and employees at schools for the inconvenience caused. We will continue to monitor the situation.
