A giant in the world of television and theatre, this actress needs no introduction. Motshabi Tyelele has sharpened her skills at a number of different institutions from having Speech and Drama training at UCT to studying PR at the Public Relations Institute of South Africa.
She has also had extensive voice training at the Royal National Theatre eCompany in London. This has all helped her scoop up a number of awards and accolades throughout her career. Awards such as the Avanti Award for Best Sitcom Actress in 2001, in 2004 she won a Naledi Award for Best Actress in a Drama, then the year 2010 saw her win a SAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Her role in Suburban Bliss won her a ‘Best Actress in a Comedy’ Artes Award in 1996, which was what made her go on to become a household name.
Following that her television appearances include the popular children's programme Takalani Sesame, the SABC1 drama Soul City and the hard-hitting, iconic SABC1 drama series Yizo Yizo. Other television series include Mirror Mirror, Khululeka, Motsamai and Kelebone. She was also the presenter of the youth talk show ‘Crossover’.
On Skeem Saam, Motshabi plays the character of “Mary”. A rich and flamboyant mother and grandmother who will do literally anything and pay any amount of money to protect her family, even if it means lying, stealing and even going the illegal route.
With her grandson Noah, now on the verge of going to prison for burning the Maphosa Nut Factory and subsequently being the cause of the death of his friend’s mother, Mary has begun to pull out all the stops to make sure that he walks away from the court a free boy. She has a solution for every problem and an answer for every question.
But now that Noah’s conscience is telling him to do the right thing and confess Infront of the magistrate, Mary has got her work cut out for her. How far will she go to convince Noah not to confess?
