Voter education, a building block in a democracy

Campaigns like “Moving South Africa Forward”, “It’s in Your Hands”, “Protect Democracy”, and many others – some creative and other not that creative – will overwhelm the voters as political parties run their campaigns.

The Manifesto

The season of the Manifesto has sprung. Political parties across the political spectrum launched their declarations of intent, some more ambitious than others, ahead of the 7 May 2014 elections. A manifesto is a public declaration of policy and aims by a political party or candidate and applies particularly in the context of elections. As witnessed by the various parties that launched their manifesto over the weekend of 22 February 2014, the issues ranged from the economy, to job creation, fighting crime, improving education, and land reform.

The campaign to celebrate 20 years of democracy and to encourage eligible voters to vote in numbers in the country’s 2014 general elections is in full swing. A number of initiatives have been introduced to create hype for South Africans to play part in the 2014 historic democracy milestone. Freedom Fridays campaign is the notable initiative that will certainly instil courage for South Africans to raise the national flag high for the 20th year celebrations of democracy as well to play part in the 2014 general elections. President Jacob Zuma, when addressing the nation on the 2013 Freedom Day challenged South Africans to walk tall and be proud of the achievements since the April 27 1994 elections.
