Bantu Steven Biko was born on 18 December 1946 in Ginsberg, a township outside King William's Town. Thirty years later, he was severely beaten to dead while in police custody. Biko, best known as one of the leaders of the Black Consciousness Movement is regarded as one of the greatest martyrs of the anti-apartheid struggle.

Biko's philosophy was that political freedom would only be achieved if blacks stopped feeling inferior to whites. This formed the heart of the Black Consciousness Movement. He believed that black people should lead the fight against apartheid. His political career was brief, but had a profound impact on the liberation struggle. He espoused the philosophy of black consciousness, linking identity politics and social action.

2012 marks 35 years since King William’s Town born Black Consciousness movement founder and anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko died at the hands of apartheid police.   Shift remembers Steve Biko and honours his legacy and the teachings of Black Consciousness.
