Madiba magic is still going strong. Even though it was a couple of days late, the Cullinan Chamber of Commerce, the Living Land crew, SABC Education and the Gauteng North Fly Fishing Club came together on Saturday to give their 67 minutes for Mandela by cleaning the brook running through the land of the Onverwacht community.

About 10 km outside Cullinan, just off the R460 you will find the Onverwacht village. This is a community that has a very interesting and rich history as the Onverwacht residents are actually descendants of farm labourers who settled in the area years ago, along with the Voortrekkers of old.

They are Afrikaans speaking Khoisan people and despite their rich history and the beautiful land they own, most of the community members are really poor. The cleaning of the Malanspruit was meant to make a difference in a practical way by improving the water quality, thus making it safer for man and animal to drink.  However, this initiative also has a symbolic side to it - water is essential for growth and new beginnings. New beginnings and growth are also what the Onverwacht community need to flourish and become food secure once again. 

In true Ubuntu spirit, everybody approached to help, sponsor or provide implements and tools was eager and willing to give even more than what was asked from them. The community embraced the initiative and young and old joined in the effort to get the brook’s water flowing once again. Nozipho Ndiweni Executive Producer of   Living Land, an SABC Education programme reminded everybody present of the overarching objective of Mandela Day. “We need to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good.”

Werner Smith, the president of the Gauteng North Fly Fishing Association explained their participation: “The nature of our sport brings us very close to the beauty of our country as it plays a vital role in many aspects of our sport. Clean rivers, the fish and insects in it, the overall natural environment and especially the conservation thereof are in our blood.”
